Travel Director: Geraldine Meaney
Regions: North and South Ireland
Trafalgar’s Travel Directors play a key role in providing each of our guests with a truly memorable experience. From the moment your Trafalgar journey begins, our Travel Directors share their local knowledge and provide a personalised, one-of-a-kind insider’s view of each destination. They are experienced travellers, learned historians and culture buffs whose job is to help you become immersed in the places you visit.
Travel Director Geraldine Meaney took a few minutes to talk to the Trafalgar Blog to share some of her experiences and give some insight to why she loves what she does.
Tell us a bit about yourself Geraldine…
I started my working life as Cabin Crew with Aer Lingus. I then qualified as a National and Dublin City Guide before recently receiving my B.A. in Theology and Psychology and M.A. in Leadership and Pastoral Care. I love working in groups, I always stay abreast of current affairs and I do volunteer work. I have travelled throughout the world.
What is the best part of your job?
I love being engaged with people from all over the world; introducing them to the beauty of Ireland and her people. Helping them to appreciate their ancestry and welcoming them to their spiritual home.
What’s your best Hidden Treasure?
Kilfenora Cathedral in County Clare with its beautiful examples of High Crosses.
What is your most memorable on the road moment?
There have been many, but it is very special when as a Travel Director I make that connection with a guest and know they will carry a special memory with them which they can relive over and over again. I’m always humbled when a guest shares something personal with me; the loss of a loved one who always wanted to make the trip or the home of their ancestry.
What vacation photo would you recommend our guests have to take?
Photos of Ireland’s spectacular scenery and the expressions on the faces of the locals, which sometimes speaks for itself!
Staple travel items?
Travel Insurance, comfortable footwear and clothing, credit cards and some local cash.
What is your tip for feeling like a local when traveling?
Try not to carry your camera around your neck, and look confident at all times.
What is your favourite food within your region?
A good Irish stew, which of course is made with the best lamb. Our Brown Soda bread is delicious too!
Must Buy Souvenir?
Something handcrafted by the locals that helps to create jobs.
What or who is your biggest inspiration?
World travel has inspired me to appreciate the comforts of home but to embrace new experiences.
What is your best travel tip?
Enjoy your new surroundings and learn from all the new friends you make from all over the world.
